Raspberry Pi Announces Their RISC-V Integration
In the very beginning of 2019, the Raspberry Pi Foundation has announced their membership of the RISC-V Foundation. What does it lead to and what all of us may get from it? Let's figure it out really quick.
First thing first, that could mean Raspberry Pi is probably starting to shift away from ARM. Though Eben, the RPi founder, says that "... instruction-set diversity is important..." and calls the RISC-V integration "an important enabler for innovation".
The average opinion throughout the community is that it's a clear sign of evolvement of future Raspberry Pi model which is going to be something absolutely different and feature a less level of compatibility with the previous models.
Obviously, a complete switching to RISC-V isn't a near term objective for the Raspberry Pi Foundation. The fact that they've got Silver RISC-V membership means they cannot really chair technical committees and participate in RISC-V Foundation’s governing board. Which, in its turn, doesn't mean the Pi Foundation has got some sort of serious plans for RISC-V at the moment. Otherwise, they simply would want to take much more control.
What does this all mean for IoT and RPi makers? Probably, nothing much of what they should care about. There's a tiny possibility that some applications may start to slow down a little bit but such bugs are likely to be quickly solved by their developers.
What about Exagear Desktop users? There's also nothing to worry about! Even when (if at all) such a shift happens, the only thing that we will need is to develop an additional back-end for our software to adapt it for use on RISC-V based Raspberry Pi devices.
Have a good day and stay in touch!
