Dear John,

Thousands of bank branches and ATMs are disappearing from high streets across the UK. For many losing their local bank isn’t just inconvenient. Elderly people, rural communities and people without access to the internet are being cut off from vital banking services - and easy access to their own money. [1]

Right now, an influential group of MPs called “The Treasury Committee” are looking into new rules to make it harder for banks to close branches if it cuts people off from services. [2] And they’re asking the public to have their say.

So Carolyn, whose bank is facing closure, set up a 38 Degrees petition calling for banking to be accessible to everyone. If thousands of us add our names before the Treasury committee's consultation closes next week, we can send a powerful message, and make sure big banks can’t put cost cutting before the communities they serve.

John, will you join Carolyn in calling for everyone to have access to vital banking services? It’ll only take 30 seconds.

SIGN THE PETITION

Carolyn set up a petition after hearing the news that her Lloyds branch in Buckley in Wales, was to close. [3] Carolyn and other people in the community, particularly the elderly and those with mobility issues, rely on the branch. If it were to close, Carolyn would have to travel over 4 miles away to the nearest bank, cutting her off from easy access to her money and face-to-face financial advice.

Banks may be private companies, but they also provide a vital public service. Cost cutting branch closures can’t be allowed to shut people out of banking services.

As 38 Degrees-ers we’ve made sure businesses do their bit for our communities before. Our local high street shops were struggling to compete with online giants like Amazon because they were paying far less tax. So, over 275,000 of us campaigned for a new tax for online companies to level the playing field - and it worked! [4]

So John, will you sign Carolyn’s petition and help make sure people aren’t cut off from banking services - or their cash.

SIGN THE PETITION

Thanks for everything you do,

Ryan, Cathy, Robin and the 38 Degrees team
